The district is also called RICE BOWL of Kashmir for maximum production of rice grains in Jammu & Kashmir.

The district is centrally located in the valley of Kashmir and is a resting place for adventure tourists since it is full of clear water streams, lakes, magnificent trees and mighty mountains where the air is cool and water sweet.

Much has been written about this piece of land who has given birth to many Legendaries viz, Habba Khatoon, Lalta Ditya, Mahjoor, & others. The District is also origin of folk tales for example, the famous love legend Hemal-Nagrai, is believed to have taken birth here. Nagrai was a serpent prince who fell in love with a damsel, Heemal. The spring where the lovers weaved there love life is found near Shopian. The remains of this place still existing at the place.

In (1335 AD) legendary mystic poetess “LAL DED” was born at PADMANPORA now Pampore. Her verses taught universal brotherhood and oneness of God. LAL DED poetry has been translated into various languages and she has thus transcended the boundaries of Kashmir.

Legend has it that her mother-in-law who nearly starved her-off treated her cruelly. The story goes like this, that LAL had always a stone in her plate covered with a thin layer of rice so that it would look like a big heap. “LAL” never uttered a word against her ill treatment. Later on LAL “relinquished her married life and became a wandering mystic. She used to wander in rags in half nude attire. She was contemporary of “SHAH-I-HAMDAN” (FA) popular tradition in Kashmir bears it from generation to generation that when “LAL” saw SHAH-I-HAMDAN” (RA) she cried out ---- “ After all I have seen a man” thereafter she is reported to have clothed herself and greatly associated herself with SHAH-I-HAMDAN.

“LAL” used to out-pour her soul in rhythmic notes which formed the first poetic composition of Kashmiri poetry celled VAKH. These were first edited by GRIERSON. Both Muslims and Pandits have a reverenced memory of “LAL DED” in their hearts.

“HABBA KHATTON” who rose to be the Queen after he wedlock with “YUSUF SHAH CHAK” also belonged to Pulwama. She later shifted to royal palace. Her poetry is most popular till date.

The district is also the birth place of the revolutionary poet MEHJOOR. Ghulam Ahmad Mehjoor popularly known as Shair-e-Kashmir (the poet of Kashmir) was born at Mitrigam on Ist August, 1887.

He is considered herald of didactic poetry in Kashmiri language. He was the first poet of Kashmiri language to incorporate themes closer to life and times of his age. Yet his lyrics have the magical appeal as those of “HABBA KHATOON”. He stands as a towering figure of transitional Kashmiri poetry from old to new.

“MEHJOOR” is the first and the only poet till now on whom a full-length movie was made. Thus he happens to be the only poet of Kashmir to have risen to the heights of legend in his life time.

“WAHAB KHAR” was born in 19th century at KHREW SHAAR, PAMPORE. A blacksmith by profession, he was also a Sufi Saint. He has projected mysticism in his poetry. His “MACH TULER” and “MEHRAJ NAMA” are considered his best poetic creations.

“SOCHA KRAL” is other great name in Kashmir mystic poetry to have been born in Pulwama district.
