highest point in the region is the Churdhar peak at an altitude of 3650 m. Yamuna river
enters the district at village Khodar Majri and flows on the eastern boundary
for about 22 km. It separates Kayarda Dun from the Dehradun and forms the
boundary line between this district and Uttar
Pradesh. A greater portion of Sirmaur is drained by Giri river or its
tributaries. It takes its rise in the hills of Jubbal and courses through the
hills of Kot-Khai and Tatesh, parts of Shimla district, and enters in Sirmaur on its south-west side. It continues its course for about 40 km forming
the boundary with the Keonthal area of the Shimla district. Giri leaves the
district at village Mandoplasa, and debouches in the Yamuna at Rampur Ghat. Tons river
enters the district near village Kot, and after flowing for about 50 km and
forming the eastern boundary of the district it joins the Yamuna near Khodar
Majri.
Nahan town, the district headquarter, was founded by Raja Karam Parkash
in 1621 AD. It is situated at an altitude of 932 m. It enjoys a pleasant climate
almost throughout the year. It has several famous temples and tanks which add
considerably to its attraction. It has an ancient palace in the heart of the
town which attracts tourists from outside. It commands an extensive and
beautiful all sides views. The town's special attractions include its three
lovely walks, known as the Villa Round, the Military Round and the Hospital

modern amenities with well furnished hotels and rest houses.
Renuka
lake, 45 km from Nahan, is the most important place of tourist interest in
Sirmaur. The sacred and picturesque lake is shaped like a sleeping woman. Each
year in November, a week long fair is held to celebrate the immortality of
Renuka and her son. Several idols of Parsu Ram, believed to be the incarnation
of Lord Vishnu and other local deities, placed in decorated palanquins, are
carried by an impressive procession to Parsu Ram Tal. Before the idols are
installed in the temple, they are given a bath in this holy lake symbolising the
body of the mother.
Churdhar peak (3647 m) dominates the entire landscape of fields, forests
and ravines. The 50 km mule track to the peak is a trekker's paradise passing
through Dadahu, Sangrah, Bhawal, Gandhuri and Nauhra. An easier journey is by
taxi or car to Nauhra and thereafter a walk of 16 km to the top. The peak offers
a fine all round view of the Gangetic plains, the Sutluj river, Badrinath
shrine, Chakrata hills and Shimla.
